Installing budgie-desktop via PPA

Installing the latest budgie-desktop is now possible via a PPA.  No more compiling code!

With a lots of googling I’ve managed to create a PPA that works for both 15.10 and 16.04 users.  Its 64bit only – but come on –  are you really using such old equipment that cannot run 64bit stuff?! EDIT: 18Feb’16 – both 32bit and 64bit packages are now available!

xubuntu (before rhythmbox 3.3) [Running] - Oracle VM VirtualBox_120

Its as easy as:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:fossfreedom/budgie-desktop
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install budgie-desktop

Then logout and login to budgie.

ubuntu xenial (before library install) [Running] - Oracle VM VirtualBox_104

To get the best results I’ve bundled the moka iconset from the moka team and the arc-theme from Noobslab.

Don’t worry if you’ve already got those PPA’s and packages installed – since the packages are the same name there will be no clashes.

Use Raven and change to Arc-Dark and the Moka iconset.

xenial2 (before compile) [Running] - Oracle VM VirtualBox_121

  1. Installed and worked great. I tried some of the preferences, and apparently clicked on something I didn’t realize at the moment, and now the header bar (top menu bar) and footer bar are both a dark grey/black and I have no access to any system settings. They don’t respond to left- or right-clicks anywhere. The underlying Ubuntu seems to be working fine. (I’m using cairo-dock and can access apps, files, etc…) Any ideas?

    • Super + N (windows key + N) should display raven.

If you are saying Raven displays but you can’t click on anything – that sounds like a bug. Maybe the window manager has hung.

Can you press ALT+F2 – a window should display allowing you to launch apps – e.g. type terminal to run a terminal.

Alternatively – if the window manager has really hung – press CTRL+ALT+T to launch a terminal and run sudo reboot —

      relogin again – same issue?

Our forums are a friendly place – or on G+

You could pose the Q there – don’t forget a screenshot!

‘This PPA does not support trusty’
Cannot add PPA: ”This PPA does not support trusty”.
