The version of rhythmbox in ubuntu 13.10 is – in my humble opinion – ugly. I mean, just look at that toolbar using the Ambiance theme…
It contains some serious instability issues due to its continuing use of the out-of-date & defunct gstreamer libraries. All in all – I certainly will not be using it.
Rhythmbox v3.0 was released at the end of september but due to the software freeze and probably the lack of manpower, this newer version did not make it into Saucy.
Look how gorgeous that is!
I’ve taken the debian sid version which was packaged by the great maintainers there and rebuilt this for Saucy. It works great!
How to install
Add my PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:fossfreedom/rhythmbox
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install rhythmbox
(Update 29/10/13) – remove the need to remove the old rhythmbox installation first since the updated package does this automatically.
(Update 25/03/14) – Install Rhythmbox 3.02 on Saucy and Trusty
Enjoy!
External Plugins
Just a quick word of warning. None of the plugins available in my rhythmbox-plugins PPA will work 😦
This is because of the change to using Python3. Assuming rhythmbox3 makes it into the 14.04 repository, I’ll repackage the available python3 plugins for 14.04 specifically.
Until then, you’ll need to install these plugins manually. Here are a list of some of the plugins I’m aware of that have been converted to python3. Look at the readme instructions on how to install.
- Coverart-browser
- Coverart-search-providers
- Desktop-art
- Equalizer
- File Organizer
- Open Containing Folder
- Rhythmweb
- Rating Filters
- Wikipedia Search
Since it is early days – get your coding fingers stuck in and help-out converting all of the existing python2 plugins to python3.
UPDATE (26/10/13) – Packages are now available through my PPA to allow easy installation. Please see my new post for further details.

Tello rienda the lyricks dont work. I like to sing and I need the lyrick to do it
dextre – see the reply below – you should file a bug report. I cannot diagnose the issue via comments.
This is great, thanks!
hello friend but, the lyrics does it work? because i have installed gnome 13.10 64bits. thank you too much
yes – it certainly works for me. If you are having any issues throw a bug report onto the authors project page: https://github.com/dmo60/lLyrics/issues?sort=updated&state=open
If you suspect a package issue then let me know what error you are seeing if you launch rhythmbox from a terminal i.e. type rhythmbox and try to activate the plugin.
anyone got the daap server working yet?
Followed instructions and installed but it still shows 2.98 version in ‘About’
If you are seeing v2.98 – this is the version of rhythmbox that came with ubuntu 13.04. These instructions are for Ubuntu 13.10.
Given that you have approx 1 month left of support for Ubuntu 13.04 I would recommend that you upgrade as soon as possible. When done, then you can also install rhythmbox 3.0.
Thanks for reply, my mistake – I was trying it on 13.04.
Installed it on 13.04 – followed instructions from here.

And, yes, I am gonna uprade Ubuntu soon. 🙂
Cheers!
